What Makes NPCs a Game-Changer in Team-Building
In a digital world, staying connected can be a challenge, especially for teams spread across multiple locations. That’s why NPCs bring a unique twist—they’re interactive, smart, and designed to enhance key team values in real time. With NPCs, core values like Speed, Innovation, or Collaboration become tangible guides within the game, not just abstract ideals. In Corey’s case, he doesn’t just “represent” speed; he embodies it, nudging teams to think fast, ask smart questions, and work as a unit to find the answer.
By integrating NPCs, our games allow teams to experience values firsthand, boosting morale, encouraging deeper understanding, and inspiring a spirit of creativity. So, what’s the experience like? Let’s look at Corey’s challenge and how he guides players toward discovering his true identity.
Corey’s Challenge - 7 Questions to Discover the Value of Speed
In this exercise, participants interact with Corey—a mysterious NPC who represents one of Google’s guiding values: Speed. They have seven interactions to ask questions, think critically, and deduce Corey’s value. The twist? Corey has been trained with a set of conversational guidelines that lead players through subtle hints without revealing the answer outright.
Here’s how the challenge works:
- Objective: Discover which principle Corey represents in just 7 questions.
- Rules: Players can only interact seven times, and they need to choose their words carefully.
- Hints and Dialogue: Corey responds with hints like “I’m something that every fast-growing company needs,” or “Think about how fast things need to move in today’s world.”
By the end of the conversation, players are ready to guess, and if they get it right, they receive Corey’s congratulations and unlock a Speed badge! Not only is the badge a fun reward, but it reinforces the importance of speed in Google’s mission, giving teams a tangible takeaway.
How We Train Corey - An NPC Built to Reflect Core Values
NPCs like Corey are custom-trained to reflect specific company values through thoughtful, playful guidance. Here’s how we designed Corey to keep teams engaged and on track:
- Conversation Design: Corey can’t just give the answer—he nudges teams to think creatively, using questions and prompts that encourage deduction. If they seem stuck, he offers hints while still keeping the challenge intact.
- Value Reinforcement: At the end, Corey shares a real-world application of his value. In this case, he reminds players of Google’s principle, “Fast is better than slow,” illustrating how they push the limits of speed across their products.
- Gamified Interaction: With each correct answer, players receive a special badge that recognizes their success and underscores the value they’ve just uncovered. This turns abstract concepts into memorable achievements.
Why NPCs Make Sense for Your Team-Building Experience
Bringing an NPC into your team-building game is more than adding a new tech feature; it’s about making values, missions, and teamwork real and relatable. NPCs create hands-on engagement with your company’s ideals, turning values into dynamic conversations rather than static statements. Imagine a team interacting with an NPC representing Innovation or Customer Focus—it’s a practical, fun way to embed what’s important to your organization into the very fabric of the game.
